County Court Bailiffs

County court bailiffs are responsible for retrieving unsettled county court judgments. While they typically consist of court personnel, their prevalence has diminished following the implementation of the HCEO 2004 regulations in 2004.

The Law: The County Court Fees Order (Amended 1994) 1982

Misconceptions:

Bailiffs tasked with collecting County Court Judgments (CCJs) are not required to hold certification.
They receive their fee irrespective of whether they successfully retrieve the debt.
They are employed by HM Court service.
They are unable to enter your property unless granted permission.
Breaking into your home is a rare occurrence and not typically threatened.
They have the authority to levy on your vehicle parked outside, except if it is under finance or bears driving school or taxi livery.
Otherwise, their authority mirrors that of a standard debt collector.
